A newly developed algorithm based on seven simple questions accurately classifies seizures in 87% of people with epilepsy and can be used for selecting antiseizure drugs.
Why this matters
Accurate diagnosis and classification of epileptic seizures is challenging and requires expertise which can be difficult in everyday clinical practice. The web-based algorithm developed and validated here facilitates accurate classification of seizure types for the purpose of antiseizure drug selection in adolescents and adults. The seizure-classification algorithm is user-friendly and is typically completed in less than 2 minutes; therefore, its utilization should facilitate diagnosis and management of epilepsy in resource-poor settings.
