In the Presidential address at ISC 2021, Dr Mitchell Elkind focused on the importance of building connections at the research, specialty, and society levels, to improve health and outcomes.
Dr Elkind, President of the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Stroke Association (ASA), and Professor of Neurology and Epidemiology at Columbia University, New York, USA, noted that key innovations and advances in health care are often the result of work at the intersection of specialties.
Examples include the growing understanding of the role of infection and inflammatory markers in stroke, and of the role of vascular risk factors in neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia.
