Alzheimer’s Disease and type 2 diabetes: a shared pathogenic pathway involving amylin?

  • Tau and β-amyloid (Aβ) are present in the pancreas of people with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and those without AD and a history of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and amylin interacts with both Aβ and tau in the pancreas and brain of people with AD.

Why this matters

  • Understanding the mechanisms linking AD and T2DM could lead to the development of common therapeutic strategies to prevent and/or treat these two diseases.
