Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) may prevent incident and recurrent major depressive disorder (MDD) in older adults with insomnia disorder.
Why this matters
Depression is a significant risk factor for the development of other disorders, and insomnia, which occurs frequently in the elderly population, contributes to a greater risk of MDD.
CBT-I has proven effective in the treatment of insomnia, but its effects on prevention of MDD have not been well studied. This study supports efforts to target and treat insomnia disorder in older adults to maximize depression prevention in this population.
