Association between Circle of Willis variants and outcomes in middle cerebral artery-M1-occlusion stroke

  • Circle of Willis (CoW) variants are frequently found in ischemic stroke patients with middle cerebral artery (MCA)-M1-occlusion; there is no association between CoW variants and 3-month functional disability, but incomplete CoW may result in increased 3-month mortality rates.

Why this matters

It is thought that CoW variants may impact stroke risk and collateral flow during stroke, but their effects on outcome in patients with MCA-M1-occlusion stroke have not been investigated. Results from this study indicate that further investigation is needed to provide optimal treatment to this patient population.
