There is a close association between neuroinflammation and tau/TDP-43 aggregation in frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Inflammation could be the driving factor behind the heterogenous nature of FTD.
Why this matters
The intensity and distribution of neuroinflammation are potentially relevant factors behind the clinical manifestation of FTD. Developing a better understanding of the role of neuroinflammation in neurodegeneration is vital, as it will guide future research towards developing effective treatments for patients suffering with FTD.
