Association between unrecognized myocardial infarction and cerebral infarction

  • There was an association between unrecognized MI and cerebral infarcts as assessed by MRI, and in particular, embolic infarcts of undetermined source.

Why this matters

  • Increased risk of cerebral infarct with unrecognized MI may explain a proportion of embolic strokes of undetermined source and raises the question of the potential benefits of anticoagulation in people with evidence of unrecognized MI.
