Black-White racial differences in left atrial structure and pathophysiology in ischemic stroke

  • Black people with acute stroke have a higher rate of atrial cardiopathy than their White counterparts.

Why this matters

There is growing evidence that race is a social construct with major biological consequences on health. The higher rate of atrial cardiopathy in Black versus White people with acute stroke suggests that the greater burden of left atrial fibrosis and impaired inter-atrial conduction may represent an unrecognized mechanism of stroke in Blacks.
