Brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression and RNA post-stroke

  • Alterations in methylation in the DNA sequence of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and BDNF antisense RNA (BDNFAS) gene, and reduced expression of BDNF in skeletal muscle were identified following stroke hemiparesis; aerobic exercise training (AEX) increased methylation in the BDNFAS gene.

Why this matters

  • Differences in BDNF expression and methylation in paretic (P) vs nonparetic (NP) muscle and following AEX provide evidence for epigenetic modifications after stroke; as BDNF may mediate the improvement in cognition after acute exercise, further investigation of the effects of exercise on BDNF methylation post-stroke is warranted.
