Depression in caregivers of patients with dementia is linked to increased visits to the emergency department (ED) for patients. Providing support for these caregivers could improve health outcomes and dementia care while lowering costs.
Why this matters
In the US, caregivers of patients with dementia play a crucial role in healthcare yet are the subject of little research. Depression in caregivers may be linked to increased ED use as a source of support, yet frequent use of the ED may ultimately lead to financial strain and functional dependence.
