Case report of bilateral ventral tegmental area deep brain stimulation for SUNCT

Takeaway

  • Bilateral stimulation with ventral tegmental area (VTA) deep brain stimulation (DBS) in a case of medically refractory short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache with conjunctival injection and tearing (SUNCT) resulted in better relief of headache than unilateral ipsilateral stimulation.

Why this matters

SUNCT results in incapacitating unilateral pain accompanied by autonomic symptoms and is often refractory to medical treatment. Identifying new SUNCT treatments will improve patient quality-of-life (QOL) outcomes.
