Clinical presentation in pediatric acute flaccidmyeltis is similar if diagnosed before or after 2014

  • Although children with acute flaccidmyeltis occurring pre- and post-2014 present with similar clinical characteristics, those with a post-2014 onset have more intrathecal inflammation.

Why this matters

The poor response to various immunotherapies, irrespective of date of disease onset, suggests that acute flaccidmyeltis is probably an infectious, rather than an immune-mediated process, and that immunotherapies should be chosen with care.
