Artificial intelligence using a deep-learning system (DLS) classified optic disc abnormalities on standard fundus images without clinical information as good as two expert neuro-ophthalmologists.
Why this matters ?
Incorrectly distinguishing papilledema from normal optic nerves could potentially lead to vision-loss and/or life-threatening complications. There is a shortage of trained ophthalmologist who can interpret ocular fundus images in real time. The results of this study may impact telemedicine platforms by providing tools that can help assist with rapid and accurate medical diagnosis.
