Comparison of thoracic epidural and paravertebral blockade for thoracotomy-induced pain

  • There is no difference in development of persistent postsurgical pain (PPP) between those receiving thoracic epidural (TEB) or paravertebral blockade (PVB) as preventive analgesia.

Why this matters

  • Despite use of TEB and PVB, prevalence of PPP following thoracotomy is high; this suggests that further research is required to improve quality of life (QoL).
