Comparison of two treatments for severe attacks of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder

  • Individuals with a severe acute attack of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) tended to recover faster and have a better expanded disability status scale (EDSS) score when treated with simultaneous intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) and plasma exchange (PLEX) versus IVMP with PLEX added on.

Why this matters

An effective treatment after an acute attack of NMOSD is critical to mitigate disability and to prevent future relapse. The results of this study provide initial evidence for a new combination of treatment for individuals with NMOSD with severe acute attacks.
