Diagnosing Multiple Sclerosis with kappa free light chain and lambda free light chain


  • When diagnosing multiple sclerosis (MS), the lack of an elevated kappa free light chain (KFLC) index is more powerful for ruling out disease in comparison to oligoclonal IgG bands (OCB), however OCB is more important for ruling out disease in a diagnosis of clinically isolated syndrome (CIS)/MS.

Why this matters

  • KFLC may be a valid diagnostic biomarker, and its detection and analysis can be automated and less time-consuming than OCB which may be advantageous.
