Effect of multisite pain on gait characteristics in older adults

Takeaway

  • Chronic pain distribution is strongly associated with poor performance in most gait measures and this effect is similar to a cognitive challenge during walking.

Why this matters

A great body of evidence shows the disabling consequences of chronic pain in older adults, with multisite pain resulting in a high risk of falls. This study suggests that chronic pain may function as a distractor in older adults whilst walking and this highlights the need to develop new strategies to improve mobility and decrease fall risk in older adults with multisite pain.
