Effect of unilateral amygdalohippocampectomy on verbal emotional memory in refractory epilepsy

  • People with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) exhibited deficits in verbal recall which were more pronounced for information with an affective component, and those with left amygdalohippocampectomy showed greater impairment in recall.

Why this matters

People with MTLE who undergo unilateral amygdalohippocampectomy often experience episodic memory impairment, but the impact of the emotional valence and differences between right and left hemispheres are not fully understood.
