Both tai chi and conventional exercise were equally effective in improving sleep quality in older adults with insomnia.
Why this matters
Current research shows that between 20% and 40% of older adults with sleep disturbances report insomnia, which can have a negative impact on their quality of life and lead to increased mortality and morbidity.
Although subjective assessments, based on patient-reported data, have shown beneficial effects of tai chi on sleep quality, data based on objective measurements are lacking.
This study provides objective evidence for the effectiveness of tai chi in improving sleep in older adults with insomnia.
