Endoscopic versus open technique for sinonasal mucosal melanoma resection

  • In sinonasal mucosal melanoma (SNMM) endoscopic resection is associated with longer overall survival than open resection.

Why this matters

  • Sinonasal mucosal melanoma (SNMM) is an extremely rare form of melanoma with a 5-year survival rate of <25%.

  • Established treatment options include wide local excision; recently, endoscopic resection has been trialed, however due to the rarity of the disease data on the benefits of open versus endoscopic resection are lacking.
