Functional status is a strong predictor for discharge destination following COVID-19: patients who are older, have comorbidities, and spend longer in acute hospital care are more likely to be discharged to an institution for rehabilitation.
Why this matters
COVID-19 manifests along a spectrum of severity, from asymptomatic to highly morbid or fatal. Understanding of post-acute care functional outcomes in COVID-19 is still emerging; however, it is evident that COVID-19 can have significant and chronic impacts on function and health, including residual organ dysfunction, weakness, motor dysfunction, and exacerbated comorbidities. Effective rehabilitation is important to improve post-acute care COVID-19 outcomes.
