Excess tissue 2-hydroxyglutarate raises preoperative seizure risk in isocitrate dehydrogenase mutant diffuse gliomas

  • Elevated tissue 2-hydroxyglutarate concentration may increase the risk of preoperative seizures in people with diffuse gliomas, with isocitrate dehydrogenase 1/2 mutant tumors.

Why this matters

In people with diffuse gliomas, isocitrate dehydrogenase 1/2 gene mutations have been implicated in seizures due to the structural similarity between 2-hydroxyglutarate and glutamate; however, the impact in the clinical settings is unknown. This important individual-based study improves our understanding of underlying mechanisms of tumor-related seizures in these mutant tumors which could ultimately improve interventions and outcomes.
