Expert reviews promising new technologies in vision research

New and emerging optical imaging technologies that could potentially help neurologists in the diagnosis and management of MS were discussed by Dr Shiv Saidha at ECTRIMS 2018.

Dr Saidha, of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, said optical coherence tomography (OCT) remains a highly effective measure, as OCT-derived measures of retinal neurodegeneration have been shown to be strongly associated with aspects of MS pathology, such as disability scores as well as visual impairment.

New technologies, however, could offer more insights into the optical pathology of MS, including vascular and metabolic changes, he said.

The main technologies discussed by Dr Saidha were:

  • OCT-angiography (OCT-A)
  • Corneal confocal microscopy (CCM)
  • Macular pigment optical density (MPOD).
