Extent of ischemic brain injury in mouse model independent of inflammasome action

  • A mouse middle cerebral artery model of ischemic strokesuggests that the inflammasome NLRP3 (NATCH [NAIP (neuronal apoptosis inhibitor protein), C2TA (class 2 transcription activator of the MCH), HET-E (heterokaryon incompatibility) TP1 (telomerase-associated protein)], LRR [leucine rich repeat], and PYD [PYRIN] domains-containing protein 3) is not involved in the acute phase of ischemic stroke and does not exacerbate injury.

Why this matters

  • Identification of immune system players in the development of ischemic brain injury will provide viable targets for therapeutic intervention.
