Factors affecting early rapid improvement in stroke severity during interfacility transfer

  • In people with stroke transferred to a regional referral center, 19% experienced early improvement on the NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) even with high rates of thrombolytic administration; rapid improvement was associated with higher initial NIHSS scores and independent ambulation pre-stroke.

Why this matters ?

  • People with stroke are increasingly transferred between hospitals to access specialist resources; these findings could assist the receiving hospitals’ resource planning and activation of the thrombectomy team.
