Factors associated with positive visual recovery in optic neuritis

  • In optic neuritis, the factor most strongly associated with visual acuity (VA) recovery at 1 year is VA at baseline.

Why this matters

  • Clinical trials have shown that corticosteroids (CS) for acute demyelinating typical optic neuritis do not improve long-term visual outcomes but may hasten improvement in the first two weeks.

  • Despite this, more than 90% of neurologists treat patients with optic neuritis with corticosteroids, without using any selection criteria.
