Functional network mapping using positron emission tomography in a novel environment

  • Novel environments are associated with increased activation of brain regions involved in anxiety, and decreased activation of regions involved in exploratory drive in rats.

Why this matters

  • Novel environment stimulation plays an important role in cognitive development and has been shown to encourage exploratory behavior in rats in non-stressful situations.

  • The model in this study could be used to investigate novelty seeking and/or avoidance behavior and its impact on cognition and reward pathways.
