Health care use before incident demyelinating disease claims as a prodromal period measure

  • Health care utilization (HCU) was greater in the 5 years before incident demyelinating disease-related clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), whether individuals did or did not subsequently develop multiple sclerosis (MS).

Why this matters ?

  • Studies suggest that there is a prodromal period (PP) beginning ≥5 years before typical MS symptoms, but it is unclear whether individuals with CIS who do not develop MS have a PP.

  • Understanding the PP characteristics for patients with CIS who do and do not develop MS may aid in earlier diagnosis and intervention.
