Hematoma surface is the major parameter of edema evolution in intracerebral hemorrhage

  • Although peak perihemorrhagic edema (PHE) affects mortality, it is not linked to worse functional outcomes in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) volumes >30 ml, and hematoma surface, rather than volume, is a primary driver of edema evolution.

Why this matters

The observation that edema has a more profound effect on functional outcome if the hematomas are smaller and irregularly shaped, suggests that people with these types of hematomas would benefit from edema-modifying therapies.
