The MS prodrome

Dr Helen Tremlett presented data demonstrating that, in the first 5 years prior to definitive MS diagnosis, there is a significant increase in the rate of hospitalizations, physician service use, and prescribed medications, compared to the general population, for non-specific symptoms such as depression, pain, headache, bladder issues, irritable bowel, and dermatological complaints.

The fact that a similar prodromal period is seen in other autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease) suggests that immune dysregulation might be the underlying mechanism.
