Human leukocyte antigen-DR expression in people with multiple sclerosis

  • Increases in expression of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DRB1 and HLA-DRB5 in the cortical grey matter of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) are associated with the HLA-DR15 haplotype.

Why this matters

  • Typically, people with MS exhibit demyelination of white and grey matter causing lesions; however, there is a subset of people with normal-appearing cortical gray matter (NAGM).

  • Past studies on molecular changes in people with MS and NAGM have been limited, and understanding these changes may lead to improvements in clinical outcomes and treatments.
