Hyperechogenicity of the substantia nigra and Parkinson’s disease risk in essential tremor

  • Those with essential tremor (ET) and increased hyperechogenicity of the substantia nigra (SN+) are at a higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease (PD).

Why this matters

  • This study supports previous reports of PD-risk in those with ET and SN+, which clinicians may use to identify at-risk individuals and researchers may use to explore a pathophysiological link between ET and PD.
