In vivo neuronal recruitment dynamics in epileptic seizures and spikes


  • In a mouse model, neuronal recruitment dynamics differed between neuronal subpopulations, with rapid recruitment of layer-2/3 pyramidal neurons (PN) and layer-4 neurons in the lead up to seizures, while layer-5 PNs were only gradually and asynchronously recruited.

Why this matters

    These results may guide development of new therapeutic strategies that can reduce the intensity and synchronicity of initial seizure activation phase discharge, such as closed loop neurostimulation paradigms that sense network activity and respond with appropriate stimulation.
