Influence of sex on APOE ε4 as a risk factor for brain atrophy

  • Elderly apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4+ females with normal cognition (NC) exhibit faster reduction in hippocampal volume than APOE ε4+ NC males.

Why this matters

  • Hippocampal volume is increasingly used as an endpoint in clinical trials for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It is therefore important to understand the effects of sex and APOE ε4 on longitudinal brain atrophy across the AD continuum, to ensure accurate representation of efficacy in trials.
