Interaction between cortical and striatal signals in focal epilepsy

  • A rapid change in striatal activity can occur after seizure onset in focal epilepsy, and cortico-striatal synchronization is higher during the pre-ictal (PI) and seizure onset periods compared with background, as well as during seizure termination versus all other periods.

Why this matters

  • Cortico-striatal interaction may have a more prominent role in focal seizures than previously thought; in particular, involvement of basal ganglia in seizure cessation provides a new rationale for deep brain stimulation in people with intractable focal epilepsy.
