Takeaway
The intensity of sleep bruxism (SB) is not associated with pain linked to temporomandibular disorders (TMD) therefore cannot be used as a predictor for the incidence of TMD-related pain; SB is however linked to an increase in all types of muscle contractions.
Why this matters
Approximately 13% of adults suffer from SB, which is a condition that leads to other clinical manifestations including masticatory muscle pain, limited jaw mobility, orofacial facial and headache in the temporal region.
People with SB are known to have a risk of developing TMD-associated pain.
