Local and systemic analgesic effects of electroacupuncture

  • High-frequency electroacupuncture (HF-EA) resulted in local and systemic analgesic effects for temperature detection and intermediate-level pain detection, and local effects in vibration detection, which were not dose dependent.

Why this matters

  • While acupuncture has shown treatment benefit in various pain conditions, analgesic effects when used in a surgical setting are not known.

  • Acupuncture may be able to be used in operating rooms to attenuate pain during surgery, which would improve the patient experience.
