Long-term efficacy of deep brain stimulation for medically refractory essential tremor

  • In those with intractable essential tremor, deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral intermediate thalamic nucleus (Vim) significantly reduced tremor severity, but the effect was lessened after 10-year follow-up, due to both habituation and disease progression.

Why this matters

  • The deterioration of efficacy of Vim-DBS over time should inform physician and patient expectations and decisions regarding treatment options.
