Magnetic resonance imaging models to predict risk of post-traumatic epilepsy


  • A rat model suggests magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could be used to identify individuals at increased risk of post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) following traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Why this matters

  • There are no available treatments for individuals with TBI who may be at risk for PTE, possibly owing to the lack of biomarkers for PTE which means at-risk individuals cannot be targeted in clinical trials.

  • Use of MRI to identify lesion patterns and progression following TBI could help to identify at-risk individuals, and thus facilitate treatment development.
