Mechanical ventilation and heart disease increase stroke risk in hospitalized people with Covid-19

  • People hospitalized with Covid-19 have an overall stroke risk of 0.5%; the risk is higher in those needing mechanical ventilation or those with ischemic heart disease.

Why this matters

There are increasing concerns about the neurological and cerebrovascular complications of Covid-19. Although the overall risk of cerebrovascular events is comparable to other viral infections and critical conditions, needing a ventilator and having ischemic heart disease increases the likelihood of cerebrovascular complications. Therefore, critically ill people should be closely monitored for symptoms of acute stroke.
