Monoamine oxidase A and neuroticism: is there a link?

  • Healthy women with higher monoamine oxidase A (MAO‐A) activity genotype have higher levels of neuroticism and impulse control than those with lower activity.

Why this matters

This is the first study to investigate how emotional stability is affected by personality, genetics, and other phenotypic variables in women. The findings help to elucidate how emotional stability is influenced by both genes and environment and that the serotonergic system plays a role.
