  • Repeated sub-concussive head injury in American football players is associated with micro-structural changes in white matter (WM) integrity.

  • Modelling of head injuries could be improved through combination of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and amplified magnetic resonance imaging (aMRI)

Why this matters ?

  • It has previously been suggested that repeated head injury – sub-concussive collision, over a longer period of time may be associated with neurocognitive impairment.

  • A better understanding of the mechanical forces on the brain during impact and how these might alter WM integrity, would allow implementation of coaching practices that monitor and minimize head impacts during the football season. Such practices would minimize detrimental changes to WM integrity and minimize secondary neurologic impairment.
