Occipital neuralgia is frequently observed in community hospital-based headache clinics

  • This retrospective study sheds light on the prevalence of occipital neuralgia (ON) in patients in hospital-based headache clinics:

    • Almost 25% of patients presenting with the main complaint of headache also had ON.

Why this matters

  • As untreated ON can trigger frequency and intensity of headache disorders, it is important that healthcare providers watch out for possible ON in patients attending a headache clinic.

  • In the future, more focus should be placed on identifying and treating ON.
