Several measures of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and retinal ganglion cell inner plexiform layer (RGC-IPL) demonstrate significant thinning in patients with mitochondrial optic neuropathies when compared with healthy controls.
Why this matters
Diagnosis of mitochondrial optic neuropathies is difficult and less straightforward during early disease stages. Previous studies have shown that various measures of ganglion cell markers may precede nerve fiber changes. Here, a retrospective analysis is performed to identify markers for diagnostic differentiation of Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) and Dominant Optic Atrophy (DOA).
