Pediatric traumatic brain injury: association between diffuse axonal injury grade on early MRI and outcomes

Takeaway

  • In children with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (msTBI), worse functional 6-month outcomes and discharge to inpatient rehabilitation were associated with a higher diffuse axonal injury (DAI) grade on early magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), but addition of DAI grade to the core International Mission for Prognosis and Analysis of Clinical Trials in TBI (IMPACT) model did not result in improved prediction of poor outcome.

Why this matters

A majority of children with msTBI experience disability, but tools to predict outcomes are not well studied. Results from this study may assist in identifying patients who will experience worse functional outcomes, though additional studies are needed.
