Perceptions of reassurance in patients with neck pain in consultations with healthcare providers

  • This comparison of concerns and fears between patients with nontraumatic neck pain (NTNP) and those with whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) may support healthcare providers who treat patients with neck pain in taking a patient-centered approach when promoting reassurance by selecting strategies tailored to individual patient needs.

Why this matters

  • A number of clinical guidelines recommend reassurance as first-line treatment for neck pain, but as patients with WAD have higher levels of disability and psychological distress and show features of nociplastic pain, their needs for reassurance may be different to those with NTNP.

  • This study provides valuable information regarding concerns and fears of patients with neck pain, which may support healthcare providers in selecting appropriate strategies for a patient-centered approach.
