PIB positron emission tomography imaging for detection of demyelination in non-human primates


  • In marmosets treated with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), [11C]PIB positron emission tomography (PET) was able to detect demyelinated lesions in gray and white matter.

Why this matters

  • Non-invasive imaging techniques are useful for diagnosis and monitoring of multiple sclerosis (MS), but magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is associated with limitations.

  • If results can be translated to humans, [11C]PIB PET may be useful in monitoring disease progression and advancing MS therapies.
