Polygenic risk scores obtained from mega-analyses of genome-wide association studies in people with ischemic stroke can identify shared etiologies and stroke subtypes.
Why this matters ?
Ischemic stroke is a multifactorial complex disease, the risk of which is determined by both genetic and environmental factors. Polygenic risk scores can establish a common genetic basis for related disorders. The determination of polygenic risk in stroke subtypes can identify risk factors that are genetic in origin, so that focus can be placed on modifiable factors that can reduce stroke risk.
