Positron emission tomography imaging of tau in C9orf72 expansion carriers


  • People with an expanded C9orf72 allele had increased tau burden in the entorhinal cortex as measured by positron emission tomography (PET) tracer AV-1451, consistent with primary age-related tauopathy (PART), but this was not associated with clinical features or psychometric performance.

Why this matters

  • This study provides additional information regarding the clinical utility of the novel, non-invasive PET tracer AV-1451, which binds to aggregated tau, as a biomarker for PART in people with an expanded C9orf72 allele.
