Predictors of acute symptomatic seizures in patients with cerebral venous thrombosis

Takeaway

  • Acute symptomatic seizures (ASS) occur in one third of all patients with cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) and several predictors were identified; however, no predictor was significant enough to identify patients with CVT who may eventually develop ASS and who would benefit from prophylactic anti-epileptic drug (AED) treatment.

Why this matters

AEDs are recommended for treatment of ASS; however, in patients with CVT who have not had a previous seizure, it is unknown what predictors would warrant prophylactic AED treatment.
